TRAVELLING WITH THE CHILDREN

Day 1 & 2 in Peru

The end of day 1 ended with a power cut. It was late and we'd had nothing to eat and I'm proud to say that we were true Brits! A trawl round the corner shop produced cheese, rolls, water and best of all candles, so we feasted with a couple we had met that night, to the sounds of Johns IPOD and had a real laugh, much to the surprise of our South American Hosts!

The dawn of day 2 saw us with a renewed resolve to crack Lima and to gain some confidence. We decided

1st Night in Lima

to experience travel the Peruvian way and jumped aboard one of many Combo Collectivo. Boy what an experience. The bus conductor leans out of the mini bus, which you're about to get on, and shouts at you until you get on. Then for the princely sum of 15p you are taken in a staccato manner wherever the bus is going. Nobody has a clue where they are going and it’s a miracle that anybody actually gets anywhere. Where you get off is completely up to you and your nerve to actually stand up again once you have been thrown into your seat! Absolutely fantastic, hysterically funny way to travel and the boys loved every minute of it.

We're proud to say that we successfully managed to find the main bus station and book tickets to our next destination (Trujillo about 10 hours north of Lima), without a hitch and so the trail begins to Ecuador!

It has been a real baptism of fire but already we are feeling the benefits of our trip. We have already rejoiced at having a window in our room, marvelled at having a plastic toilet seat and cheered when the electricity was available. We've survived the supermarket and found computers, which work. Not bad for two days work really is it
