TRAVELLING WITH THE CHILDREN

London to Lima, Peru

When we arrive in Lima we have booked 2 nights in a local hotel. After 2 days in Lima we will probably leave via public transport and head north towards Ecuador. The initial aim is to get a boat to the Galapagos Islands. We then turn back to Peru and make our way to Machu Picchu in Southern Peru. It is then off into Bolivia, La Paz and Lake Titicaca. A trip in to the Amazon will be on the cards too. After 2 months we will end up back in Lima for the next stage of the trip.

After 2 months of hotels, hostels, B&Bs etc we will be able to sleep in a bed with clean white sheets, warm running water, good food and friendly faces. We will be staying with our friends Dave, Tiff, Dan and Joe, however I think that they will want to de-lice us and spray us will chlorine before we will be allowed to set foot in their lovely home. 2 weeks of luxury will then be followed by a week long trip south to the whale breading grounds. This should be one of the highlights of the trip. After a week away we will head back to BA to fly onto Rio de Janeiro.

This is the one we are worried about, only ever heard bad things about Brazil. I am sure that the bad press is unfair. We will spend 2 weeks here and will make our minds up on where we will go when we get there. So the new year takes us over the date line and into New Zealand. This month will probably be split; 2 weeks on the North Island and 2 weeks on the South Island. There are a few friends living in this part of the world so we will be trying to meet up and hopefully discover new places with local knowledge. Must check out the insurance to see if we are covered for extreme sports. We are looking forward to the spectacular scenery and fresh air.

Half way round now. We have a number of friends over here so we will be travelling round Sydney and Melbourne visiting. A trip to Ayers Rock is planned before setting on a month long trip up the coast to Cairns. Mum and Dad Rodger are planning to fly out to meet us for the coast journey and see Joe and Finn after 6 months. Once in Cairns and loads of surfing we will fly over to Perth to visit and meet more friends. 2 weeks in Perth and more surfing and we leave Oz for South East Asia.

The aim in Asia is to see as much as possible and as much of the native country rather than the industrialised parts. We are under no illusion that this may be difficult. Train travel will be our principle mode of transport and we expect to travel and explore Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam before ending up in Bangkok. There is a plan to try to get out to some of the island surrounding this part of the world, but until we get there we are unsure how feasible this will be.

This one is on John's list of things to do. Could not come this far round and not surf Indonesia. We will have said that this will be a holiday visit, although I am not sure if a break from travelling round the world can be classed as a break! When we get there we will decide on what else we will do, I am sure that there is more to the Islands than just surfing!

After arriving in Mumbai we will head south to Goa, where we have organised an apartment to stay in for a couple of months. Again we hope to spend some time in the local community and get to know the place. There is a local school which Fee hopes to teach in and I would like to help out on a local project. After 2 months we then have to make our way across southern India to Chennai.

Back in blighty. We have no idea how we will feel, will we be glad to be back, will our outlooks on life be the same, will we want to go back into the corporate life? This feels a long way off, so we will address this when it happens.
