TRAVELLING WITH THE CHILDREN

Before You Go

Before travelling with the children you will need to put all your personal affairs in order. Here are some suggestions to help you ensure you have covered everything.

Renting the House
If you have a property and you wish to return to it you may want to rent it out while you are away. Get 3 or 4 renting agents in to view the property. Make sure you understand all the costs as your rental income has not only to cover the mortgage, but all agent fees and storage. Consult your agent about how this income is taxed and contact the Taxman (UK Residents www.hmrc.gov.uk) for a form which will negate the need to be taxed at source by the Agent.

Wills

One of life's necessaries. You need to ensure you have a will so that if anything should happen all your affairs are in order.

Power of Attorney
You will need to seek legal advise regarding appointing someone to handle your legal and monetary affairs whilst you are away. They can write cheques for that forgotten bill or sign legal documents on your behalf.

Tax
Make sure you inform the tax office of your plans to ensure that all is in order before you leave, and notify them of your return date.

Utilities
Inform all utility companies that you will not be paying for their services after your departure date as if you were moving house.

State Benefits
Ensure that you inform the authorities about your plans if you are claiming state benefit for yourself or your children. This includes child allowance (UK Residents www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit).

Vehicles
Ensure that your local vehicle agency is aware of your intentions so that you do not have to pay tax and you may even be able to claim some money back. Note for UK Residents. Off Road notices need to be update so this is also a job for the person with Power of Attorney. www.dvla.gov.uk
