South America
When in South America, each major town will have a Comidor Municipal, except for Argentina. This is in the main market where fruit vegetables, meat and fish is sold.
There are small eating areas/shops run for the traders. These are not clean by western standards, but the food is cooked daily for the traders and only enough is cooked to trade for that day. They have to ensure cleanliness so that they do not effect trade by selling bad food.
You can usually get a good meal for US$1-2. Obviously, these are in the local areas so you have to be prepared to stick out like a sore thumb, so be very careful with your money and be aware.
