TRAVELLING WITH THE CHILDREN

Tips For Schooling

Before parting with any money for tickets, right at the beginning of planning, you will have to think about schooling the children.

Your first task should be to arrange a meeting with your childrens head of school. They will be able to help you in your preparation, and hopefully support your decision. You will need to work closely with the head and the school, as they may help by supplying you with the national curriculum, to ensure your children and covering the same subject as their peers.

Contact your local education authority to find out if they run any parent courses for teaching. These are probably aimed toward helping with homework, but will cover the tools and methods your school uses to teach maths and literacy. This is important as you want your travelling children to learn the same maths, literacy techniques and tools as their peers, to ensure a smooth transition back into school.

Does your children´s school need help? If you have time try to do some helping at school. This will allow you to see the teaching techniques in action and will allow you to use these techniques when travelling with the children and self teaching.

Remember your children will now have one to one tuition. So do not beat yourself up about doing 2-3 hours every day whilst on the road. They will be soaking up the experiences and your teaching will only add to their learning.

Try to find a teacher at school who is sympathetic to your trip. Get their e-mail address and ask if you can mail them for help when the school is becoming difficult.

You will want to take some reading books with you, but just remember you need to carry them. It is possible to get stories off the internet which you can print and use as reading material.

When travelling with the children the internet is also useful for teaching resources and you can also print these resource to use whilst teaching.

REMEMBER to stay in touch with the school head, so you can ensure that there are places for your children at school when you return. This is not a guarantee but it is advisable to stay in touch and make sure they are aware of your plans.
